Hawkes Hotel

The bed was extremely clean and comfortable and I did sleep really well. And as a return guest I find the location of the hotel ideal for both the venue I'm visiting and also the sea front.

I hate being negative but previous stays have been much better. This time check-in was a nightmare - 6pm and no rooms ready, and the owners seemed clueless and ignored me a lot; I was asked if I wanted to pay by card then told I had to pay with cash as their reader wasn't working. When I did it turned out they had no change; they offered to give it to me 'later' but never did - only £2 but not what you expect. I was on crutches and given a room up 33 stairs (there was no lift). There were copious tea stains on the swing bin, a coating of crumbs on the surface where you would make your coffee, and a thick clot of what looked disconcertingly like blood on one of the mugs. There was no spoon supplied. The temperature was below zero but the window was broken and wouldn't close. Granted it was a 'cheap' hotel, but you do expect basic cleanliness. And a civil welcome. I suspect maybe new owners as I've always had a good experience here before.

Location was good

I understand that the business had only been taken over 3 days before we stayed so i am willing to give a bit of slack, however when we arrived there where no lights on we rang the bell and the new owner took us through, he then proceeded to take all my credit card details down along with security code even though i had paid for the room on my card. I understand that it may for any possible damages occur and they did give me my details back when I asked for them on departure. The rooms definitely need up grading, the room we where in was very small and cols for quite awhile until we got got it warmed up although the room was very draughty. When we got up in the morning we couldn’t get any hot water so had to go without. Cannot comment on breakfast as we opted not to stay for it.

tiny bedroom, bedroom furniture thrown together, screws on show, no room for a chair, tv impossible to view in any comfort due to its poor position, taps in bathroom need replacing urgently they leak and barely work. the loo leaks water all over the floor, water temperature for shower was either boiling hot or stone cold, tiny bathroom. room was so hot even with radiator turned off (october stay !)
